Uly Grant finds himself deep underwater in the Gulf of Mexico, tricked by a magic act on a crooked gambling boat, his old friend and new love missing, perhaps dead at the hands of an unknown killer.

While thinking about the potential plot lines for my next novel, Gulf Waters, I received a message from Sgt. Troy Fergueson with our local K9 Forensics And Cadaver Recovery Team regarding Sophia. The team is made up of Law Enforcement Officers and their specially trained dogs, and is supported by charitable donations.

"Our community has called upon K-9 Sophie on countless occasions over the past six years to locate victims of homicides, natural disasters, and personal tragedies – she has answered the call every time! 

NOW OUR “SOPHIE” FACES HER OWN LIFE THREATENING CRISIS AND NEEDS THE COMMUNITY TO COME TO HER AID!

On May 5, 2008 K9 Sophie was diagnosed with transitional cell carcinoma, an inoperable cancer in her urethra.  A few years ago this kind of diagnosis would spell the tragic end of a canine’s life.  However, thanks to advancements in modern medicine at the University of Florida, Gainesville K-9 Sophie’s life can be spared and she can once again return to service as a forensic canine!"

The photo above is Troy, Sophie and me at the latest Pasco County Sheriff's Citizen's Academy Alumni Association meeting. Sophie is a bundle if energy, and loves working and showing off for Troy and friends - while doing very serious work.

UPDATE from Sgt. Troy Fergueson May 23rd:

"I am very happy to report that K9 Sophie made it over the first and most difficult hurdle in her treatment.  Physicians at the University of Florida say her case was a perfect fit for this mew and advanced medical treatment and everything went exactly as planned in the surgery Thursday.  K9 Sophie is at home recovering and faces four more hurdles in the treatment process but things are promising.  Her next follow-up is n two weeks, she will undergo a scope procedure to determine the precise degree of success in the treatment.  The support we are receiving from the community is indescribable and I thank each of you for your prayers and support."
