Pen to Paper to Published Author - Do it!

First make sure you have your book complete - front and back cover, front pages. Dan Poynter's book, The Self Publishing Manual, is an excellent source for details. He also offers an info-filled free newsletter

Legal Aspects of Publishing - Whether you are going to establish an independent publishing company or you use the services of an established publisher, you should understand the fundamentals of operating a publishing business, from copyright to Library of Congress Card Number to paying local taxes.

Printing - You finally have a proofed and edited book that you are so tired of you don't know what to do. Maybe now is the time to publish and you are looking for someone to print your masterpiece. And at this moment Print on Demand - POD or Fulfillment on Demand - FOD printing are viable alternatives for independent publishers. (By the way - your book still needs an outside, quality edit by someone who has at least  a college-level skill at catching and correction minutia, both grammatical and logical! We all think we can do it, but it just ain't so.)

Sales Fulfillment - Any hope of making a profit may disappear if you don't manage your fulfillment process carefully. In addition to the cost of book production, largely consumed by your printer and promotion, the discounts demanded by distributors and most retailers, including Amazon.com, will eat away another big chunk.
